Although Rose loves Calvin, she is unsure about whether she is ready to leave one marriage and enter into another. The internal conflict that Rose feels leaves

The differences between Rose's aunt and uncle heighten the drama of the overall story. As I read this story, I was very eager to find out Rose's fate.
Ottey has written this novel in a way that keeps the reader engaged. It is unpredictable with a twist at every corner. The main character, Rose, is relatable to any audience. The classic love triangle that she finds herself in will captivate readers. The story is set mainly in Brooklyn, but the scenes in Jamaica will delight the senses.

The sequel to Jamerican Connection, Runaway Comeback, by Sandra Ottey, is the captivating story of a Jamaican woman, Rose, a victim of continuous physical and emotional abuse by her cheating husband, Donovan. Rose was given a raw deal in life, as she had a child and got married to Donovan, all before graduating from high school. All her dreams and hopes had to be put aside. As a result, she became dependent on her husband for everything. Her dreams of being an independent woman and pursuing higher education were continuously trashed by him. She had no real voice and felt stifled as Donovan made all the decisions and laid his forceful hand on her once he got angry.
With physical and emotional scars from her tumultuous relationship, Rose saw it necessary to leave her husband for good. In doing so, she flees with her daughter to Brooklyn, USA, with the help of her best friend, Laverne; her aunt-in-law, Wendy and her love interest, Calvin. There, she continued her education and graduated among the best in her class. She divorced her husband and was at a good place in her life. Sadly, she had to return to Jamaica and found herself regressing into the situation she had decided to leave behind. Considering her daughter, herself and a potentially good life with Calvin, another important choice was made to face her demons, which encompassed her ex-husband and all that he had done to turn her life topsy-turvy.
The book is an ode to battered women, and those who have dropped out of school. Runaway Comeback is a story that heightens growth from the depths of despair, returning to the part of one's life where hope, faith and strength are the main roots of a powerful woman, and overcoming the obstacles of being dependent on an abusive man. The story told is filled with the harsh realities of abuse, infidelity, secrets, the art of redeeming oneself, and overcoming all obstacles in a life unexpectedly uprooted. It is thought-provoking, relatable and inspiring to readers who might be experiencing what Rose went through.

When I first got this book and read a bit and the title, I thought "oh no, another book about a woman in an abusive relationship complaining with no recourse, who finally gets away. But then she decides that she can't make it on her own, or he's talked her into believing he's changed and she comes back. But Runaway Comeback was definitely not that!
Rose wasn't what you'd call an uneducated woman, as many stories seem to show. Rose did go to high school and as life does throw curves and challenges our way, she met Donovan, fell in love and ended up being a young mother. But Donovan did marry her and they became a family, but sometimes love isn't enough!
Donovan begins to show his true self, a philanderer and an abuser, Rose's dreams and desires seemed to diminish as her husband's cheating and abuse flourished. But the story doesn't end with Rose becoming complacent. Rose becomes determined when she can no longer settle for what Donovan has been dishing out. She wants more for herself and her child, and you want her to find some happiness too!
Can and will Rose find a better life, and even a better love? Will Donovan prevent her from doing better? Where will she go, who can she turn to for help? But if she finds help, will it be too late?
This was a wonderful read, giving me more than I thought I'd get. The characters and the storyline kept me reading, with a twist that surprised me. I love that some of the scenes take place in Jamaica, one of the places on my bucket list.
Runaway Comeback is definitely a book I'd recommend to any and everyone looking for an engaging and interesting read.

Book was a little too much for my reading pleasure. To much going back and forth and I sort of got lost along the way.
